SGRT Case Study: Use of MOLDCARE in Maskless Head and Neck Cancer Treatment Presented at the SGRT Community, December 2023
This case study explores the feasibility of Maskless immobilization during radiation therapy treatment for head and neck cancer using Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT).
Abbey Adams, Radiation Therapy Treatment Unit Leader at Genesis Care North Shore/Mater, Australia, outlines the initial motivation and objectives of the study:
"Historically, patients suffering from severe claustrophobia and high anxiety have presented challenges in head and neck radiation therapy, as they cannot tolerate the confinement of thermoplastic masks."
To address these challenges, this study utilized SGRT treatment with AlignRT, head & neck board S-frame and custom head & neck MOLDCARE RI II cushion, indexed onto a headrest for effective immobilization with optimal shoulder and neck contact.
The patient reported reduced stress and no abnormal side effects with the Maskless immobilization setup, highlighting the significant impact of this approach.
This outcome is pivotal as the primary goal of this technique is to offer better support to such patients.
Looking ahead, the team aims to collaborate with more radiation oncologists to further trial this technique and gather data from a broader patient cohort.
